So I was first introduced to Laurann Dohner through the New Species series and absolutely loved every book! Since that series I've read the Zorn Warriors series and one book from her cyborg series. This has been my most recent read and I enjoyed it...however my favorite books are all still within the New Species and Zorn Warriors series. I had mixed feelings about Grady's and Mika's characters...I enjoyed them but then at the same time I would get frustrated with them. Overall, I still liked this book and it was a great read--still couldn't put it down! So, I liked this book and would recommend others to read it but I also highly, highly recommend others read the New Species and Zorn Warriors series . Those will always be my favorites!

I loved it. Every minute was good. I loved that they didn't sugar coat the shifter mate thing. Didn't make it sound so easy to be w a shifter. Real complications. Steamy steamy scenes. Liked both MC but the only thing that took half a star for me was the quick ending wrapped up in one convo. There was a lot of drama in this book and the H didn't a lot of crappy things that one convo is not going to magically fix. Too easily wrapped up.

I had mixed feelings about this story. It was well written and was alright but I had issues with the conflicts and the ways they were handled. Grady seemed iffy through most of the story and Mika was put in impossible situations that just made me feel bad for her. There is some insta-love going for those that don't like that sort of thing.

Mika lives in California and has a life but nothing is really holding her there. She has an uncle Omar that is a werewolf shifter and she goes back to her home town to visit him regularly. She's thought of moving back to be closer to him but he wants her to marry a human and thinks it's too dangerous for her to live there full time.

Grady is the first born of the pack Alpha in a wolf shifter pack. His mother was human and wasn't with his father when she started raising Grady. When he started showing signs of being a werewolf as a kid, Grady's mom found his dad and dropped Grady on his dad's doorstep. Unfortunately, Grady's dad's mate is a horrible woman who looked down on Grady because he was half human and wouldn't allow him to be taken in. Grady was raised by a number of families in the pack instead. Now he's known for staying away from humans except for the occasional one night stand.

Mika comes to town to visit for a couple weeks, She knows about shifters but her uncle doesn't bother to tell her that it's mating season (a time she's never visited before). This means that there are many strange werewolves in the area looking for sex and they're not all very picky about who they get it from. Humans are supposed to be off limits but not all the visitors follow the same rules. So Mika is in town and craving some chocolate so she goes for a stroll to the store and gets dragged in to an alley by 4 werewolves. She screams as they're trying to start a gang rape and before too long, Grady comes along and saves her. He then proceeds to come looking for some repayment (but they don't actually have sex). Mika is rather embarrassed by the whole thing (and was rather turned on by Grady) so she doesn't say anything to her aunt or uncle about the incident. Omar does finally realize that Mika needs guarded against the strange wolves in town and decides to draft one of the best enforcers in the pack, Grady.

So as her guard, Grady is staying with Mika 24/7 but pretty much treating her like crap and barely talking to her. She's pretty much locked in the house so she pushes to go out. They go to Grady's bar which is supposed to be safe ground but Mika almost gets abducted by a strange shifter right there in the bar and in order to save her from a horrible fate, Grady is forced to lay claim to her. Uncle Omar isn't happy about it but the way it happens means they have to have sex (during the rest of the mating season) or Grady will go crazy. Mika's Uncle basically gives her to Grady to have sex with for the next 2 weeks. Mika isn't all that happy about it at first but she was already attracted to Grady and figures she'll go along with it. Grady makes it very clear that he doesn't want a human mate so Mika knows she's headed for trouble when she realizes that she's fallen for Grady within the first couple days. Then she's pretty much plagued with life being horrible because Grady is constantly showing her that she's not what he wants and it hurts her. Grady is so clueless that he doesn't realize what the heck is going on or that his actions are hurtful. This pretty much continues until the end and then was have a whiplash turnaround and Grady and Mika get their HEA.

To be honest, the way the story went just didn't work for me, probably because I'm not in to the constant drama. The forced situations and frequent ups and downs (but mostly downs) wasn't really my thing so I had trouble getting fully in to the story. I liked Mika and wished for her to get her happiness but I was less than convinced that Grady would be the one to give it to her (at least until the last 5% of the book). I can see someone liking this story that was more in to the forced situations and big drama. I may try the next book in the series as I've heard it's better than this one and I do like the author. D

When the idea of theme months for the blog came up and we were asked if there were any shifter books we’d like to read, I immediately volunteered to read the Mating Heat series. It’s been far too long since I last read the first two books and I never got a chance to read book three once it was released. So this was the perfect opportunity for me to revisit old friends and within just a few pages, I found myself immersed into another of Dohner’s wonderful worlds. For me, Dohner consistently delivers fascinating characters, a good amount of action, and some seriously hot sex and Mate Set is no exception.

As the first in the series set around the Alpha Pack headed by Elroy Harris, this installment wastes no time getting into the action as our first encounter with Mika is as she has been dragged into an alley by four drunk and randy werewolves. Fortunately for Mika, her uncle is a werewolf and an important member of the pack, so she knows how to deal with the local shifters. Unfortunately for Mika, these shifters aren’t local, it’s mating season, and they don’t care that she’s human and that their plans to use her to slake their mating heat will result in her death. When another shifter joins the party, Mika finds herself a rescuer instead of another attacker and flees only to be pursued by her rescuer who demands a little bit of sexy payment that serves to save her yet again when they part. When the two meet again the following day, their harmless encounter serves to ramp up the heat when her rescuer, Grady, is assigned to guard her during the mating season to protect her from being harmed or mated. What follows is a seriously sexy, sometimes humorous, and often frustrating read as Grady attempts to deny his mating instincts and accept what Mika is offering. Of course, when instinct takes over Mika soon finds herself wondering if her heart is going to come out unscathed once Grady’s mating heat passes.

Mate Set definitely delivers on the sex and because we’re dealing with shifters in the midst of their mating season, the sex is hot, rough, and frequent – and I loved every bit of it. The connection between Mika and Grady occurs rather quickly due to Mika feeling a level of safety in Grady’s presence that she’s only experienced with her Uncle Omar. Once the reader meets Grady’s “stepmother” it becomes glaringly obvious as to why he has no interest in mating with a human, no matter how much he is drawn to Mika. This doesn’t make his actions toward her any less hurtful, but it makes them understandable. And his actions make Mika’s reactions VERY understandable because I would’ve headed straight to the airport too. Mika’s flight provides the perfect opportunity for the author to introduce Grady’s half-brothers and expand upon the reader’s introduction to the Alpha pack, thereby laying the foundation for the series. Of course, Dohner gives the couple (and the reader) a much deserved hot and happy ending that left me ready to reread His Purrfect Mate immediately.
