Even wallflowers find a way to bloom...

They were dismissed as hopeless—girls too plain, too shy, too gauche to stand any chance in the ruthless competition of the London season. But Helene Fitzgerald, Madelene Valmeyer, and Adele Edmundson have no intention of remaining wallflowers. Aided by the notorious novelist, Deborah Sewell, they form the Wallflower Pact and set out to find true love for themselves—and maybe even their chaperone.

The Stepsister’s Triumph

Madelene Valemeyer has never felt welcome in her father’s house. The daughter of his first wife, she will be one of the richest heiresses in England when she turns twenty-five. But for now, Madelene is just a miserably shy girl, tormented mercilessly by her stepmother and three half-siblings. Nearly unable to function socially, Madelene certainly can’t see that Benedict Pelham, the artistic son of a marquis, is falling in love with her.

Benedict Pelham hates London society, blaming its endless seductions for the death of his brilliant first wife. But in quiet, beautiful Madelene, Benedict believes he's finally found his chance to begin life again.

Madelene, though, is done being quiet. With the help of her friends and fellow wallflowers, she is preparing to transform from shy mouse to brilliant Miss. But social success has a high price—is Madelene prepared to pay with her heart?

Praise for the novels of Darcie Wilde

“This scintillating and multifaceted historical will leave readers eager for more.”—Publishers Weekly

Regency Makeover Part II A Regency Makeover Novella Book 2 edition by Darcie Wilde Romance eBooks

I have enjoyed reading the trilogy of which this is the second. The writing style is polished and pleasant, the storyline manages to be creative within a very common theme of finding that necessary husband within the rigid tonnish high society parameters of Regency England, and the characters are interesting. The drama feels a bit unreal, a bit over the top. On the whole, enjoyable.

Being a perpetual wallflower isn’t all that fun, so three friend Helene Fitzgerald, Madelene Valmeyer, and Adele Edmundson have made a pact, to do all they can to make this season a success. So far it seems to have worked and Adele has helped them make a splash in society with the design of her dresses and managed to get engaged to a man she loves. However, Madelene doesn’t think she will have the same success, painfully shy and downtrodden by her father and step mother, the only thing she seems to have in her favour is her massive amounts of money. But, Benedict Pelham, second son and artist sees her, he seems to see the very core of who she wants to be. Can both of them see beyond their pasts and finally find happiness?

I enjoyed the first book in this series, it was fun and seemed to be the start of a great adventure for the three friends, Adele, Madeleneand Helene. However, this book seems to have slowed it all down to a bit of a maudlin pace. Unfortunately this wasn’t something I enjoyed quite so much as the first book, in fact I found myself slowly drudging through this book just wanting to finally reach the end.

Honestly, I found this book a little boring, at first I sympathised with Madelene’s shyness and her despicable family, but in the end I found both her and Benedict self doubts and general faffing around very irritating. I just wanted the story to move along, instead there was a lot of internal monologue expounding on their woes and in the end it left more exasperated that emphatic.

But, I did enjoy the first book in this series and I am interested in reading the final book about Helene, the very practical, straightforward and plain spoken of the group of friends, so although this book wasn’t something I enjoyed, I do plan on reading the next book. I do feel a little disappointed however, as I normally enjoy books about the shy wallflower finally finding the perfect man for her, sadly the characters didn’t pique my interest enough for me to feel truly invested in their outcome.

Like I said, I will read the next book in the series, but this book didn’t quite hit the spot.
Madelene Valmeyer is an heiress living with her ungrateful and selfish relatives who constantly guilt trip her into giving them more money to pay off their trivial debts, much to the irritation of her long-suffering trustee. She’s a very reserved and shy young woman whose meekness sometimes borders into the pathetic. I found myself constantly wanting her to toughen up and be a big girl and stand up to her good-for-nothing family, like her good friend, the strong-willed bluestocking, Helene; Madelene is more a kicked puppy.
And I have to wonder about Benedict Pelham’s own motivation when he only seems to want to protect and save Madelene from her parasitic family. He somehow sees the attractive woman hiding inside the meek facade but, honestly, I don’t really see how he could in the extremely humble way that she presents herself. Perhaps their one enlightening conversation about the painting he creates of her in the first chapter at the gallery provides a tiny clue but, before that, he only saw her spying on him when he was commissioned to paint another work at a mutual acquaintance’s house party. So how he got from her timidity to be able to see the genuine woman inside is sort of a mystery to me. But after the drama of his tragic first marriage, Madelene’s submissiveness is exactly what attracts him in the first place.
Benedict is an artist and widower, whose first wife’s death causes great speculation and gossip in the ton. He is drawn to Madelene but fears he isn’t good enough for her because, well, he’s an artist, something that wasn’t exactly de rigueur in Regency England.
Madelene and Benedict are a very quiet and understated couple so their passion isn’t very passionate. Their weaknesses–her lack of self confidence, his past demons–aren’t absorbing enough to merit the great conflict of why they cannot be together.
As in the previous novella, Madelene’s best friends Adele (The Bride Behind the Curtain) and Helene (the next novella) support her and one another in their common quest to conquer London society by dressing well and entertaining the most important names in the aristocracy. Their unconventional chaperone, Deborah Sewell, a novelist (gasp!), continues to intrigue this reader with her secretive and colorful life as she guides and advises her young protégés. I hope Darcie Wilde writes her story in this Regency Makeover series as she’s a fascinating character.
However, Wilde does write well–I very much enjoyed her provocative debut, Lord of the Rakes–and her pacing is good, keeping the story moving along at a steady clip. This series reads like a serial in that it is presented in installments without a true resolved ending. That’s not a complaint, merely an observation. I just don’t find Madelene or Benedict very exciting. Likeable? Yes. But also a trifle boring.

I'm really not much of a reviewer but I had to for this book. It's well written and engaging with likeable characters. The reason I had to write this though is it avoids my main pet peeves of romance novels. There is conflict but it's not contrived and most importantly to me is there is no dubious consent. I'm so happy to recommend this book to everyone.
I was totally captivated by this story. Very gratifying to see "modern" issues tackled and mostly overcome in this historical setting along with a well paced romance.
